Our Story
I grew up helping my father in the garden. Like many children who spend long summer days pulling weeds and working in the heat, I remember thinking at the time that it was hard work and something I probably wouldn’t choose to do when I was grown.
But life has a way of bringing you back to the things that matter.
When our own children were older, I found myself drawn back outside in the warm months, working in the sunshine and watching things grow. What had once felt like a chore slowly became something deeply satisfying. There is a special kind of joy that comes from planting something small, tending it with care, and eventually sharing the harvest with your family and friends.
Before long, what began as a garden started turning into something more.
My husband and I found that we both enjoyed researching plants, learning about different varieties of fruits and vegetables, and dreaming about what we might grow next. Many evenings were spent reading about orchards, vineyards, and heirloom crops, talking through ideas, and planning little projects together. What started as curiosity quickly became a shared hobby and a way for us to spend time working toward something together.
Over time our little farm began to take shape.
After our nieces began having children, we started thinking about the farm in a different way. We wanted this to be a place where children would love to come — a place where they could pick berries, eat fresh fruit straight off the plant, and see where food actually comes from. Growing up in Appalachia, we were fortunate to be part of a tradition where many families grew their own food and lived, at least in part, from the land. Preserving that heritage and sharing it with the next generation became an important part of what we were doing.
Eventually I decided to take the step of officially designating our property as a farm and turning our hobby into a small family business. Buzz & Blossom Farm was born out of a love for simple things: sunshine, good soil, growing plants, and sharing the harvest with others.
Today our little farm includes a garden, an orchard, an apiary, and our recently completed vineyard.
Our orchard includes apples, peaches, plums, pears, nectarines, berries, and other fruits that thrive in the hills of eastern Kentucky. Our vineyard continues to grow as we experiment with grape varieties that are both beautiful and well suited to our Appalachian climate. We also grow a wide range of vegetables and peppers, including many varieties I had never even heard of until my husband started researching them.
His love of history has also led us into the world of heirloom crops. We enjoy growing traditional varieties like Jimmy Red corn and other historic plants that connect us to the agricultural traditions of the past.
The bees came along a little later. After noticing that pollination in the orchard wasn’t quite what we hoped for, we decided to start an apiary. My husband had long been interested in beekeeping, so it felt like the perfect time to learn something new together. Like many things on a small farm, we have learned a lot thanks to generous neighbors and friends who have shared their knowledge and experience with us along the way.
In the kitchen, our harvest often turns into recipes and homemade treats that we share with family and friends. We’ve experimented with hot sauces, pepper jellies, baked goods, and other creations that make use of what we grow. In the future we hope to make grape juices, honey mead, and muscadine wine as well — though those will remain something we make for gifts and personal enjoyment rather than for sale.
At its heart, Buzz & Blossom Farm is simply about growing good things and sharing them.
Whether it’s fresh produce, local honey, plant starts, or just the experience of seeing food grow from the soil, we hope our farm reflects the spirit of Appalachian self-reliance, hospitality, and appreciation for the land.
We’re glad you’re here.
