Why we started keeping bees.
The bees came to Buzz & Blossom Farm partly out of curiosity and partly out of necessity.
As our orchard began to grow, we noticed that pollination wasn’t always as strong as we hoped. Fruit trees and berry plants depend heavily on pollinators, and we began to realize how important bees were to the success of the farm.
At the same time, my husband had long been interested in beekeeping, having watched his uncle working bees as a child. After doing some research and talking with friends and neighbors who kept bees, we decided to give it a try.
Starting an apiary has been one of the most fascinating things we’ve done on the farm.
Watching a colony of bees work together is incredible. Thousands of tiny workers each have a role, and together they keep the hive healthy and productive while pollinating the plants around them.
Since adding bees to the farm, we’ve enjoyed learning about hive management, bee behavior, and the important role pollinators play in agriculture.
The bees help our orchard and vineyard thrive, and in return they reward us with one of nature’s sweetest gifts—local honey.
Our apiary has quickly become one of our favorite parts of the farm. My husband can’t help but chuckle every time we enter the apiary and I greet our tiny little farmhands with a “Hello beeeees!”
